What is Lean Methodology?

Lean manufacturing or lean production, often simply “lean”, is a systematic method for the elimination of waste within a manufacturing system. Lean also takes into account waste created through overburden and waste created through unevenness in work loads. Working from the perspective of the client who consumes a product or service, “value” is any action or process that a customer would be willing to pay for.  “Lean Manufacturing” Wikipedia: The Free Encyclopedia.  Wikimedia Foundation, Inc. 13th October 2015.  Web. 22 Oct. 2015.  <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lean_manufacturing>.

What is Value?

Value, as viewed by the customer, can be broken down into three categories: Quality, Delivery, and Cost.

Quality:

The Value to the customer is that he gets the quality he is expecting, not a compromised product that suits the company’s processes.

Delivery:

The Value to the customer is receiving it on time.

COST

The Value to the customer is in what they are actually paying for, and not having to pay for unnecessary steps in the process, also known as waste.

WHAT IS WASTE?

The seven wastes can be identified in every process. We have seen huge savings achieved by identifying wastes in the early stages, as well as in the long run.

These wastes include, but are not limited to:

  • Overproduction
  • Waiting
  • Defects
  • Motion
  • Over Processing
  • Inventory
  • Transportation

HOW CAN LEAN ENTERPRISE PARTNERS HELP?

At Lean Enterprise Partners, we identify all the steps in your process to define what creates value and what does not. We have found that 60 percent of what happens in a process does not add any value and can be removed in conjunction with Lean Methodology. We believe that once a company begins producing a product, it needs to move through a production system without being placed into a holding area for later processing. By doing so, the company will avoid increased inventory levels and batching. When “work-in-process” flows smoothly through production, with minimal buffers between steps of the manufacturing process, waste is eliminated.

Lean Enterprise Partners is a private consulting firm that is focused on the key principles of the Lean Methodology:

  1. Identifying value
  2. Eliminating waste
  3. Generating flow
